COALITION ACTION ITEMS

EDUCATING STAKEHOLDERS
We aim to provide convenient access to information about our public school system for anyone to access and learn more about the ins-and-outs of The System and how it works. From laws and policies and who makes them to how school is funded, stakeholders can learn how to affect the most powerful changes for positive outcomes for all kids.

LITERACY / CURRICULUM
Our aim is to keep academic issues of concern at the forefront of district decision making. These include: restoring advanced classes which were removed from our district offerings, declining literacy rates in both reading and math, as well as curricula we feel needs to be added, revised or eliminated. We advocate with this academic focus on behalf of all kids.

SCHOOL BOARD ENGAGEMENT
Our focus is providing direction on how to communicate with our elected officials at both the local Rochester Community Schools Board of Education and the State of Michigan Board of Education. Effective communication is key to keeping all elected Trustees informed and listening effectively to the public who they represent.

GIRLS SAFETY RESOLUTION / POLICY
An urgent concern in RCS is the lack of any school policies which would ensure the safety of our girls and boys in their own bathrooms and locker rooms. Our district has passed a broad resolution which prioritizes the interests of those who do not possess the natural genetics to legitimately utilize these formerly safe and private spaces, without any policies which keep everyone 'safe'.

PARENTAL PARTNERSHIP
We strive to remind our Board about Michigan’s Revised School Code of 1976, which states in part, "...The public schools of this state serve the needs of the pupils by cooperating with the pupil’s parents and legal guardians to develop the pupil’s intellectual capabilities and vocational skills in a safe and positive environment.”
We aim to keep parents informed of their legal rights.

BOOK RATING SYSTEM Library & Classroom
Despite claims otherwise, parents are not calling for 'book bans'. Our Coalition stands for review of books before being brought into our libraries and classrooms, and a rating system being implemented to ensure our youngest students are not being exposed to inappropriate materials which they are not developmentally prepared to process. We strive to bring awareness to our district.

GOVERNMENT INTERACTIONS
Communication with lawmakers is an important part of being a community stakeholder and advocate. Many educational concerns stem from laws enacted or funding provided by either State or Federal government. It is vitally important to stay connected with the key education-focused legislators to best focus our advocacy efforts.

THE FUTURE OF PUBLIC EDUCATION
Our Coalition is comprised of many different people advocating for a renewed & robust public education system to continue on and thrive in Michigan. We wish to be the momentum at all levels to improve the educational outcomes of every child in our state. Whether in the public school system, in a private school environment, or being homeschooled - every child deserves a foundation of strong educational standards with which to grow within.
